Hand-Ground Bone Black Pigment, Liminal Water & Acacia Resin on Fabriano
1000 x 700mm
Original, unframed work
Each piece is a single, unrepeatable record of a water event: pigment carried by water collected at a meeting point of two waterbodies (fresh and salt) settling according to its own logic as the water stills. These works are indexical. They capture water in its perpetually changing states: absorbing, refracting, reflecting, drenching, flooding, flowing. Waterbodies appear here as mineral, pigment, river water, liminal water where salt meets fresh, bone and resin.
Made with bone black pigment that I hand-grind myself. The bone is calcium accumulated in a living body over its lifetime, transformed in extreme heat, then carried by water before finally settling onto the page.
What remains is the trace of a movement that happened only once.
