HIBERNIA

Our Autumn ‘23 trip to Ireland was particularly special as we got to travel together through our home country and make work in some of the most beautiful places on earth. Our HIBERNIA series features paintings made in Altar in West Cork, Derryclare Lake in the Inagh Valley and Glassilaun Beach on Connemara’s vibrant shores.

Each piece is one-of-a-kind and is a direct result of the solar conditions of the place on the day it was created. The water that we used in our cyanotype mix at each location, was an essential element in the final works. The clear saltwater at Altar and Glassilaun gave us fresh aquatic blues and deep underwater hues that mimic the coast. The water in Derryclare Lough was rich in minerals and played havoc with our cyano mix; its blue green hues burst on the page complimenting the rich overexposed orange oxide.

Derryclare Lake iii // Inagh Valley // Connemara // UV5
Cyanotype and lake water on paper.

September 2023

Derryclare is one of Ireland’s most scenic bodies of water and to work on the banks of the lake under the gaze of Derryclare mountain was a true joy and honour. While in residency at Interface Inagh we spent an afternoon of sunshine painting cyanotypes using the water from the lake. Its mineral rich waters bleached chemical magic into the paper. Dark and rich in tannin from the hills and fen the water leached sharp marks of navy and green. Low alkalinity may too have played a part in the hues and form presented. The paintings we made at Derryclare are in essence unique and mysterious. One of a kind portraits of the dark waters that flow through the Inagh Valley.

Each piece is mounted on 300gsm acid free watercolour paper and is ready for framing. Price excludes shipping. Pieces can be shipped to most places worldwide. Please select EARTH SPUN LIGHT shipping option.

Glassilaun Sunset i // Connemara // UV3
Cyanotype and sea water on paper.

September 2023

On numerous winding drives through the mountains of the Inagh Valley we passed Kylemore Abbey, turned off at Letterfrack towards Renvyle and continued along the beautiful coast roads that lead to a stretch of sandy beach that rests below Mweelrea mountain at the mouth of Killary Fjord. Glassilaun, or glas ilaun (green island) became a kind of punctuation mark during our time in Connemara. We returned numerous times and experienced the coastline’s ever changing weather and light. We bathed one afternoon in crystal water and walked on warm sand. Later in the week we swam in grey wind, running to the car with our towels to get out from beneath enormous mauve storm clouds.

One evening after exploring the island at low tide we set up camp on a wee sandy mound surrounded by purple rock. The sea made its way around us as we swam in the sunset and painted cyanotypes with seaweed on the beach. The resulting works are full of bubbling coastal energy. A wide range of blues were brought out by the sun and the salt to make dynamic works that feel like snapshots of an underwater dive through clear water with shapes of moving air and seaweed moving coolly in the drift.

Altar Cave // Toormore // West Cork // UV5
Cyanotype and sea water on paper.

August 2023

One scorching morning in West Cork we drove through Ballydehob and Schull and further west into a looming sea mist that muted the light of the day. We stopped at Altar, the rocky coastal site of a wedge tomb dating to around 2500 BC. The place milled with tourists exploring the rocks and shoreline surrounding the site. We followed a path through the scrubs and climbed down onto the stones that were smooth and wet from the tide. We found a small cave in the rock and tucked ourselves in there for the day as the sun burned off the mist.

We spent a glorious few hours there in the heat from the rocks and the shade of the cave. We swam in secret out of view of anyone else and painted cyanotypes onto paper. We experimented with dye heavily diluted with saltwater and multiple exposures that layered colour and form. We trailed seaweed and paintbrushes across paper hoping to capture a bobbing sense of reflected glare. The paintings from Altar are captured fragments of light. They hold the glint of the midday sun on the water’s surface and the diffused light that blooms through the coastal gloom. Browse the limited series for your favourite.
